Spanish Language Summer Program Day 5: Story Time with Tito Puente Mambo King

Tito Puente Mambo King - Rey del Mambo book review and activities

Spanish Language Summer Program: Day #5
For our Spanish Language Summer Program I always consult with my helper {wink} the theme for our Spanish lesson. I give him suggestions, and he decides what he'd like for us to do. This time he chose the book Tito Puente Mambo King for story time at summer camp. I was especially excited about this book because I love sharing with little man biographies of notable Latin figures.

Angry Birds Birthday

Since we're celebrating little man's birthday in Puerto Rico we had a small birthday lunch celebration with his friends at summer camp.  It was an all Angry Birds theme:  pizza, cake, and party favors.

Angry Birds Pizza and Cake

We celebrated little man's birthday with a lunch at his summer camp.  We had an Angry Birds pizza, and an "improv" Angry Birds birthday cake. I had a young lady make Angry Birds cake pops. However, my mind was set on having a cake, too. So I decorated a smaller cake that I purchased at our local grocery store with some of the cake pops. The result? I love it, and so did my baby!  Each child had a cake pop, and my baby had his very own Angry Birds cake. :)

The Angry Birds pizza was an idea that  I found on Pinterest, and for the life of me I couldn't find the original source since it's been pinned and repinned.

Letter To Our Son: Celebrating Your 5th Birthday

**For the past two months, I've been writing letters to you on each birthday.  However, this letter is different from the rest.**

Dear son:

I can't believe that 5 years ago on this date at 12:12 noon you came into this world. Today you are turning 5 years old! Where has time gone by?

I look at you, and see how much you've changed physically since the day you were born. You look a lot like your Papi, though you're a much better version!  However, when it comes to personality I have to admit that you're very much like your Mami!

You're a determined and strong-willed child. This will be helpful as you get older, because you will not allow obstacles to sway you from your goal. You will find a way to reach them, and look for alternatives. At your age, I'm pretty amazed on how you tend to do that a lot. You're also a problem solver. For instance, I remember offering to volunteer to read story time at your school, but I lost my voice. I was going to cancel but you offered to "read" the book while I showed the animals.

I love that you question everything! You're inquisitive, and a very smart boy. Not saying this because I'm your mom :) but because it's true!  You're a very hands on little boy, always willing to help and contribute! I hope you're still that way when you're 14 yrs. old!

Angry Birds Party Favors

Little man is a huge Angry Birds fan! He even came up with the idea of making his own do-it-yourself Angry Birds craft! So of course, with an upcoming birthday he asked for it to be with an Angry Birds theme. I had been pondering on whether or not to go with his request,  since we're actually going to celebrate his birthday in Puerto Rico with his little cousin this summer. However, I couldn't resist the idea of having a small celebration with his friends at the summer camp.

Spanish Language Summer Program Day 4: Latin Children's Song "Los Pollitos Dicen Pío, Pío, Pío"

Spanish Language Summer Program: Day #4

I grew up listening to the Spanish children's song  ♫♫"Los pollitos" (The Little Chickens)♫♫, and it was a song that I wanted to pass on to my child.  When we started singing the song he loved it! It didn't take him long to learn the intro: ♫♫Los pollitos dicen pío, pío, pío. Cuando tienen hambre, cuando tienen frío. La gallina busca el maíz y el trigo...♫♫

Spanish Home Lesson: Learning the ABC's in Spanish (El Abecedario)

Little one has been practicing his ABC's in Spanish, and we even made a toilet paper roll train out of it.

However, we need to continue with the reinforcement. I found at the dollar store an alphabet foam with an "Ñ"!!! I was beyond thrilled because it was in Spanish, and I just paid 50 cents for it! :)

Spanish Language Summer Program Day 3: Story Time and Yoga with Sofía en una Aventura por la Selva

Spanish Language Summer Program: Day #3

For our third day of the Spanish Language Summer Program we had story time with Sofia en una Aventura por la Selva by Giselle Shardlow.

As I read Sofía en una Aventura por la Selva in Spanish, I pointed out some key words in English to benefit the little ones. Before each yoga pose, I asked the children what did they see in the picture? If it was an animal I'd ask them what noises did they make? Then I had them repeat the words in Spanish after me: autobús, tucán, jaguar, etc.
